The context

Small habits, real savings

Many clients ask us for the best ways to save on their electricity bill. Most require almost no investment — and deliver real results.

Our 8 tips

Easy to adopt today

1

Wash in cold water

The water heater is a major energy user. Machines and detergents made for cold water clean just as well while saving hot water.

2

Use the clothesline

The dryer runs on 240 V and heats air — very energy-hungry. In summer, the line saves energy, disinfects naturally in the sun and softens fabrics.

3

Take a shower, not a bath

A 5–10 min shower uses 20–60 L of water; a bath, 150–200 L. A 7-minute shower is on average 3 times cheaper.

4

Lower the temperature at night

Heating can account for up to 54% of your annual bill. An electronic thermostat that lowers at night delivers substantial savings.

5

Heat unused rooms less

In storage or unoccupied rooms, safely lower to 12 °C and keep the doors closed.

6

Switch to LED lighting

LEDs use 6 to 12 times less energy than traditional bulbs, last far longer and give off less heat. All upside.

7

Wash dishes in cold water

Run the dishwasher only when full, use the cold-water cycle with the right detergent, and air-dry with the door ajar instead of the heating element.

8

Choose Energy Star appliances

The Energy Star symbol, backed by the EPA, identifies energy-efficient appliances. A smart choice that lastingly cuts your bill.

Frequently asked questions

Saving electricity: your questions

How can I lower my home electricity bill?+

Lower the heat at night and when away, seal air leaks, switch to LED, maintain your appliances and use smart thermostats. Small combined habits make a real difference.

What costs the most on my bill?+

In Quebec, space and water heating make up the largest share, often more than 50%. That’s where the biggest savings are.

Are smart thermostats worth the investment?+

Yes, in most cases. They adjust the temperature automatically and cut heating consumption, with a return on investment within a few years.

Does LED lighting really make a difference?+

Yes. An LED bulb uses up to 80% less energy than an incandescent one and lasts far longer.
