My Light Bulb Keeps Burning Out: Why?

Residential · Commercial · Industrial — Montreal, Laval & North Shore

Same fixture, every couple of months. It’s not bad luck: it’s a clue. Here are the real reasons a bulb keeps burning out, and the case where it reveals a more serious problem across the whole house.

The context

Always the same lamp giving up the ghost?

You just changed the bulb… again. Always the same fixture, every couple of months. Frustrating — but above all, it’s not bad luck. A bulb that keeps burning out in the same spot is a clue: something, in that fixture or the installation, is cutting its life short. Here are the real causes, how to spot them, and the case where it reveals a more serious problem across the whole house.

The diagnosis

The real causes of a bulb that burns out

Six culprits come up almost every time.

1

Vibration

Ceiling fan, garage door, a floor that moves above: the shaking breaks the filament of incandescent and halogen bulbs. LEDs, with no filament, are immune.

2

The wrong wattage

A bulb too powerful for the fixture overheats and burns out fast — and damages the socket. Respect the maximum wattage printed on the fixture.

3

Overvoltage

If the home’s voltage is too high, bulbs burn out everywhere, often. It’s the sign of a supply problem to take seriously (see below).

4

A loose connection

A loose wire at the fixture creates micro-cutouts and heat that “kill” the bulb repeatedly — and can blacken the socket.

5

A worn socket

The little contact spring at the bottom of the socket sags over time: poor contact, arcing, bulbs that fail early.

6

Dimmer or quality

A non-“dimmable” LED on a dimmer, or low-end bulbs, burn out early. Brand and compatibility matter.

The guiding test

One lamp, or across the whole house?

A single lamp affected

The problem is local: vibration, wrong wattage, incompatible dimmer, or the fixture’s connection or socket. We fix the fixture — or switch to LED.

Everywhere, and often

If bulbs burn out all over the house, beware: voltage too high or a loose neutral. This is no longer a bulb issue — it’s the supply to check.

The link to know: bulbs burning out everywhere and lights that vary in brightness point to the same culprit. We explain it in our guide “My lights are flickering” — the notorious loose neutral, to address quickly.
The simple solution

In 8 cases out of 10: switch to LED

Most bulbs that burn out are still incandescent or halogen. LED solves the problem on its own, most of the time.

An LED has no fragile filament, runs cool and lasts for years. You just have to pick the right one: a “dimmable” bulb if you have a dimmer, a good certified brand, and the right white tone for the room. We guide you in our article “Warm white or cool white?”

The red flag

When it becomes a warning sign

Most of the time, a bulb burning out is harmless. These signs are not:

  • Bulbs burn out across the whole house, more and more often.
  • They burn too bright before failing, or the lighting varies in intensity.
  • The socket is blackened, smells burnt, or the bulb gets hot abnormally fast.
  • The fixture crackles or flickers in addition to burning out bulbs.
Why it’s serious: overvoltage (voltage too high) or a loose neutral “cooks” your bulbs and, worse, damages your electronics. A blackened socket signals an arc. In both cases, cut the power and have it checked — it’s a real risk, not a quirk.
We fix the cause

Rather than buying bulbs forever

Changing a bulb every two months is costly and annoying. Our team identifies the real cause — vibration, connection, worn socket, unsuitable dimmer or supply problem — and fixes it once. We often take the chance to convert the fixture to LED and settle the question for years.

We handle it: fixture diagnosis, re-terminating a connection, replacing a socket or dimmer, checking the voltage and the service in case of doubt. Regular rate $150 + $140/hr (1 hr min); emergency $495 + $255/hr.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us

Why does my bulb keep burning out in the same spot?+

It’s not bad luck: that fixture has a specific cause. The most common are vibration (fan, garage door) breaking the filament, a bulb too powerful for the fixture, a loose connection, a worn socket, or a dimmer incompatible with an LED. We identify which and fix it.

Is it dangerous when a bulb burns out often?+

Often no, it’s local and harmless. But if bulbs burn out all over the house, if they burn too bright before failing, or if the socket is blackened and smells burnt, it’s a serious signal: overvoltage, loose neutral or an electrical arc. Those cases also damage your appliances and warrant a quick check.

Can vibration make my bulbs burn out?+

Yes, it’s a classic cause. Under a ceiling fan, near a garage door, or beneath a floor that moves, the shaking breaks the fragile filament of incandescent and halogen bulbs. The simplest fix is switching to LED, which has no filament and resists vibration.

Do LED bulbs burn out too?+

They last much longer — often 15 to 25 years — but they can fail early if they’re low-end, if a non-“dimmable” LED is on a dimmer, or if there’s a faulty connection or overvoltage. Choosing a good certified brand compatible with the dimmer solves most cases.

Bulbs burning out everywhere — what does that mean?+

It’s often the sign of voltage too high in the house or a loose neutral at the panel or the Hydro connection. This fault “cooks” bulbs and can damage your electronics. Unlike a single bulb, this case should be checked quickly by an electrician.

Can the wrong wattage damage my fixture?+

Yes. A bulb whose power exceeds the maximum printed on the fixture overheats: it burns out fast and can damage the socket and wiring, even creating a fire risk. Always respect the maximum wattage — and with LEDs, this constraint nearly disappears, since they run very cool.

Why is my socket blackening?+

A blackened socket signals overheating or an electrical arc, usually from a loose connection or a sagging contact spring. It’s more than a bulb problem: cut the circuit and have the fixture checked, since an arc in a socket is a possible fire cause.

How much does it cost to fix a fixture that burns out bulbs?+

At Groupe Quenneville, a regular visit is $150 travel plus $140/hr (1 hr minimum), and an emergency is $495 plus $255/hr. We find the exact cause — vibration, connection, socket, dimmer or supply — and fix it, often by converting the fixture to LED to settle the matter for good.
