Finishing Your Basement: The Electrical the Code Requires

Finishing your basement: the electrical the Code requires

Before the drywall goes up, your basement’s electrical has to be planned: number of outlets, GFCI protection, detectors, dedicated circuits. Here’s what the Code asks — and why you want to do it right, once.

Before the drywall

A finished basement has its rules

A basement isn’t just “pulling a few outlets.” The Code requires a minimum number of outlets, specific protection, and circuits sized for the use. Doing it once, properly, before you close the walls — that’s what saves you from opening everything back up later.

Enough outlets, well spaced

The Code sets a maximum spacing between wall outlets — no more extension-cord jungle.

GFCI protection in damp spots

Bathroom, laundry corner, near a floor drain: GFCI required.

Smoke and CO detectors

One smoke detector per storey, basement included; CO if there’s combustion or an attached garage.

Dedicated circuits for big loads

Home theatre, kitchenette, space heater: each on its own circuit.

Why not improvise

What’s behind the wall stays 20 years

A badly wired basement is a problem you seal in: impossible to see, costly to fix. Ungrounded outlets, overloaded circuits, boxes buried in insulation… all invisible fire risks. A master electrician plans the whole thing before finishing, to Code — and you get a detailed invoice, useful for insurance and resale.

The plan

Finishing your basement, step by step

1

Plan it with you

We map the zones (living room, office, bedroom, laundry) and each one’s needs.

2

Circuits and outlets

We run the circuits, place outlets to Code, and GFCI-protect the damp zones.

3

Lighting and detectors

Recessed LED lighting, well-placed switches, smoke and CO detectors.

4

Inspection and closing

We check everything before closing the walls — so nothing has to be reopened.

Frequently asked

What people ask us

How many outlets does a basement need?+

The Code sets a maximum spacing between wall outlets, so you never have to run an extension cord across the room. The exact number depends on the layout; a master electrician calculates it based on your walls and usage.

Do I need GFCI outlets in the basement?+

Yes, in damp spots: bathroom, laundry area, near a floor drain or foundation wall. GFCI protection cuts power on a ground fault — essential wherever there’s water.

Do I have to install smoke and CO detectors?+

Yes. One smoke detector per storey, basement included. A carbon monoxide detector is required if there’s a combustion appliance (furnace, gas water heater) or an attached garage.

Can I wire my basement myself?+

No. In Quebec, residential electrical work is reserved to an RBQ-licensed, CMEQ-member company. Non-compliant work hidden in the walls is also a risk to your insurance.

How much does it cost?+

It depends on the area and the zones to power. At Groupe Quenneville, a regular service call is $150 plus $140/hr (1 hr minimum). We plan it with you and quote clearly — free quote at 514-503-1353.
