Installing a ceiling fan or heavy fixture, safely
A fan that wobbles, a chandelier you don’t dare hang: the problem isn’t the wiring, it’s the support. Here’s why an ordinary box isn’t enough — and how to make it hold, for good.
The real issue is what holds it to the ceiling
Hanging a ceiling fan or a big fixture seems simple… until it starts to wobble — or comes down. The problem is almost never the wiring: it’s the support. An ordinary electrical box isn’t designed for the weight and vibration of a fan.
A box rated for a fan
Marked to support the weight and vibration — not a standard box.
A solid anchor to the structure
Fixed to the ceiling framing, not just the drywall.
A proper connection
Switch, dimmer or speed control depending on the fixture.
The right fixture in the right place
A big chandelier or an outdoor fan (porch) has its own requirements.
A fan that comes down is an accident
A fan runs for thousands of hours: the slightest anchor weakness grows with vibration. An unsuitable box eventually works loose — and a fixture weighing several kilos above a bed or a sofa doesn’t forgive. A master electrician installs the right box, solidly anchored, and wires it all to Code.
Installing a fan or heavy fixture
Check the existing support
We see whether the box in place is rated and well anchored — often, it isn’t.
Install a suitable box
A fan-rated box, fixed to the ceiling structure.
Wire and control it
Switch, dimmer or speed control, depending on the fixture.
Test the balance
We check it runs without wobble or noise.

What people ask us
Can I hang a fan on an ordinary electrical box?+
No. A standard box isn’t built for the weight and, above all, the vibration of a fan. You need a box rated for fan support, anchored solidly to the ceiling structure — otherwise the fixture eventually works loose.
My fan wobbles. Is that dangerous?+
A wobble is a sign of imbalance or a weak anchor. Over time, vibration loosens the support. We check the anchoring and balance: a properly installed fan runs without moving.
Can I swap a ceiling light for a big chandelier in the same spot?+
It depends on the weight and support. A heavy chandelier may require a reinforced box and anchor. A master electrician confirms the support can hold it before installing.
Do I need a special switch for a fan?+
Often yes: a speed control, and sometimes a compatible dimmer for the built-in light. We install the right control for your fixture.
How much does it cost?+
It’s usually a short job. At Groupe Quenneville, a regular service call is $150 plus $140/hr (1 hr minimum). We install the right box and wire it all up — 514-503-1353.
