Modern “cold climate” heat pumps work down to −25 °C and beyond. Below that, backup heating (baseboards, furnace) takes over. That’s why we often talk about a hybrid system: the heat pump does the heavy lifting, the backup covers the cold snaps — and that’s where proper electrical sizing matters.
Sizing it right: not too big, not too small
A poorly sized heat pump always disappoints. Too small, and the backup heat runs constantly and you barely save. Too big, and it “cycles” — starting and stopping non-stop —, wears out early and handles humidity poorly.
