A fuse and a breaker have exactly the same purpose: cut power when a circuit exceeds its capacity, to protect the wiring, the equipment… and people. A properly installed fuse panel does that job. Where danger appears is in misuse — and that’s exactly what insurers worry about.

The fuse
Current passes through the fuse. When it exceeds the maximum rating, the conductive strip melts and cuts the circuit. Simple and reliable — but single-use: once blown, it must be replaced.
The breaker
Same protection principle, but it resets: after a trip, you flip it back to “ON.” More convenient day to day, and the standard for modern installations.
Over-fusing: fitting a fuse that’s too big
Here’s the trap. Plug fuses are all the same size and easy to swap. When a 15 A fuse keeps blowing, the (bad) reflex is to fit a bigger one: 20 A, then 30 A… The result: the fuse stops blowing, but the whole installation overheats — wiring, outlets, components. That’s when the fire risk becomes real. The fuse wasn’t the problem: it was doing its job. Over-fusing is the danger.
Why insurers are wary of them
